Dallas sits on a soil that never quite settles on what it wants to be. Across most of the city, the ground under a house is Blackland Prairie clay, a black, sticky vertisol that swells thick after a wet spring and shrinks back hard and cracked within weeks of a dry August, and soil scientists describe cracks in that prairie clay running more than four inches wide and a foot deep in a normal dry stretch. A house does not sit on ground like that so much as ride it, and the two facts most people notice about living in Dallas, a summer that runs long and hot and a house that occasionally sticks a door or hairlines a wall, trace back to the same clay and the same climate acting on it from opposite directions.
